Unit of Inquiry 5 – Where We Are in Place and Time

Homes

1st March to 3rd May 2013

Central idea: People have homes in different places for a variety of reasons.

Lines of inquiry:

  • types of different building materials for our homes in Chiang Mai (form)
  • similarities and differences of the features and design of homes from around the world – past and present (connection)
  • reasons homes are made from different materials and designed in different ways (causation)

Final Assessment:

In groups, students will construct a model home suitable for a specific environment/culture. The environment/culture will have been described by the class beforehand, and the needs for people living there discussed. In this task the students’ thinking skills will be assessed in regard to analyzing what the home needs. Students’ communication skills will be assessed as they design and build together, and finally present to the class about their completed construction. The learner profile trait of being open-minded and the attitude of tolerance will be assessed as students complete the task together as a group. Click here for a draft of the assessment rubric.

Believe it or not it is not my intention to get your children as dirty as humanly possible for all our field trips - it just happens! Here we are actually mixing the brick mortar with our feet.
